Kevin Jay Smith, Director of Bands
Zora Foster, Assistant Director

As a tribute to our mascot, the cyclone, the Chester High School Cyclone Regiment presents its 2009-2010 program, F5. The program will chronicle the life of a storm chaser. The show will open with Robert W. Smith's Into the Storm, which will set the scene and build excitement. We then forshadow what is to come with Jay Bocook's Into the Light, which is the calm before the storm. We will close with an original piece called F5, written by Kevin Smith. An F5 tornado is the most powerful, concentrated wind storm on earth. Enjoy this year's production of F5!
We would like to thank our generous corporate sponsors for all you do!

Jamboree, Band Camp Update, and Start of School

The hornline will be performing the national anthem at the jamboree this afternoon. The Cyclone Regiment is gearing for the first home game. This upcoming week will be a busy one. We will be gearing up for the first home game this upcoming Friday by cleaning our opener (including working with the full front ensemble,) as well as learning many stands tunes, both new and old favorites. In addition to this, school will be starting on Monday.
Special thanks to all of the parents that have been working hard making props and getting all of the behind the scenes work done!

Mid-Week Update
Special thanks to Mrs. Reid and the rest of the summer office staff for dealing with the massive amounts of copies I've asked for so far. With show music, stands music, handbooks, schedules, calendars, memos, warmups, drill, etc., they really pile up.
Rookie camp is done, and it went very well. The kids didn't complain a bit, despite the heat and hard work they put in. The kids are well aware of the goals I have set for them, and are always keeping them in mind whenever I ask them to do things.
Schedule and music is up (see previous post.) You'll be getting warmups, the opener, a schedule, and bandcamp checklist tomorrow. Full band tomorrow and Friday, 8AM-12, 1PM-6. Start hydrating yourself now.
For camp you need the following items:
Insulated water bottle with name written in permanent marker. Available at Wal-Mart for a few bucks, as well as probably Dollar General (I haven't looked) and maybe some other places around town.
Tennis shoes, with socks. They must fit (not too loose, laces tied, etc.)
Comfortable clothes you can move in. Blue jeans are unacceptable. Light colors are encouraged as dark colors absorb heat.
3-ring binder (1 inch to 1 ½ inches.) This will be kept with you at all times and will be for drill (every member will have their own drill for the entire show,) music, handbook, handouts, and anything else I hand out.
Sheet protectors
Dividers
Pencil. (At EVERY rehearsal.)
Sunscreen (I'm already red after 3 days.)
Hat with brim. (Keeps sun off of lips and face. Again, your band director has badly chapped lips after 3 days.)
Sunglasses
Bookbag. This is for taking your binder, and other accessories outside while your have your instrument and water bottle in hand.
Medical/travel forms turned in.
Fees paid (more on that later.)
B.E.R.P. (Brass only.)
Valve oil. (Brass only.) This will be provided, however you are strongly encouraged to have your own.
Backup reeds (notice that's plural.) (Woodwinds only.)
Sticks/Mallets with names on them, or other I.D. markings. (Percussion only.) You will be given ONE set of sticks or mallets, after that, you must buy your own (director will provide.)

Changes...
With a new marching season comes many changes. The entire Chester band family would like to wish Mr. Morris the best of luck with his new job. A COMPLETE and REVISED 2009-2010 season schedule will be announced within the next few days as it is finalized. Much work is being done behind the scenes so that we kick off the season with a bang. As I leave the middle school and take over as director of bands at the high school, I ask all of you to work hard and make this the best season yet. I am extremely excited to work with all of you and look forward to the year and what we can accomplish. The new middle school director and high school assistant director will be announced shortly.
The staff for the upcoming season is being finalized, and you will recognize many of the faces from the previous year. We will soon formally announce the staff. I would like to personally introduce our drill writer, Mr. Gordon B. Moore III. Mr. Moore is a South Carolina native, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, an alumnus of Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, and a proud member of the United States Air Force. Mr. Moore lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife. Welcome Mr. Moore! Mr. Moore is eager to begin working on the visual aspect of our show.
Our show this year is entitled F5 and tells the story of a storm chaser. Tornadoes are measured in strength using the Fujita or F-scale, and range from F1 to F5, with the F5 being the biggest of them all.
